Duke of Hamilton, Hampstead

About a week ago, a circular went round the East London CAMRA branch (of whom I’m a member) explaining that this place in nearby North London might be turned into flats. So… having a weekend in which to stay back in London an adventure hatched (more of that back on my travelogue – A Grim North).

‘The Duke’ is tucked away a few minutes to the West of Hampstead Heath in a quiet peaceful area.

The Duke of Hamilton

It’s a free house* presenting the standard range of Fuller’s beers usually, on my visit featuring Gale’s Seafarer’s Ale (3.8% – ideal for a sunny day). The pub has been North London CAMRA pub of the year 3 times, so quite why it’s owners feel it’s only worth is as flats I’m not sure. The area does feature many gastro-pubs…more of which later.

As we whiled away the time in the sun outside, plenty of people came and went. It certainly seemed like a community hub.

CAMRA has launched a campaign to save the duke. If you have an interest in preventing yet another pub disappearing from a community get involved. I think I might.

*edit – I erroneously thought this was a Fuller’s house – apologies!
