The East London beer scene continues to grow with the recent re-opening of the Cock Tavern in Mare St, Hackney which now includes it’s own on site micro-brewery “Howling Hops”.

Some 16 hand pumps are available on the main bar, with 6 of these given to proper cider on my visit. On the cask ale front there was much delight to be found in a selection featuring both local and regional small brewers – the first up a summer beer ‘Jamboree’ by East London Brewing Co. I also managed to sample Howling Hops, Brew No1 IPA, which was full of hop flavour but well balanced. Perhaps a little strong for a summer day (at 5.7%) but that of course is down to personal preference.

Around the corner there is a selection of craft keg beers, including Redchurch from Bethnal Green and Kernel from Bermondsey but having a tight schedule to move on to Crate Brewery (more from there later) I didn’t get to try any of these instead finishing with a Hot Dog Chilli Stout by Binghams which was pretty spectacular.

The Cock Tavern can be found on Mare St in Hackney, very close railway bridge where London Overground crosses Mare St.  It is around 5 minutes walk from Hackney Central station.
