The Black Friar

I haven’t been to The Black Friar in ages. With the tube and rail stations closed it seems like a world away even through in reality it is just a few minutes walk from Southwark, Fleet St and Bank. Sitting on the corner of New Bridge St/Queen Victoria St, the pub has almost disappeared a few times but has survived the latest transformation of the area.  Both externally and internally the pub is incredibly decorated – the mosaic sign is just the start!

On this visit I had the wrong lens to really capture the interior.  Stained glass windows feature on the street facing windows. The back-room can only be described as a wonderful cross between a snug and a crypt!  There are so many little details to take in that this public house is best visited several times to really allow time for it to sink in.

Beer-wise, this is a Nicholson’s pub (an M&B chain) meaning a fairly solid range of regular beers plus some guests.  You can usually bet on Timmy Taylor’s Landlord and London Pride as the regulars.  My visit saw two lots of Brains on offer – SA and Dark, of which I opted for a half of the latter. Very nice and a reasonable £1.45 for a half!

In my opinion this is a gem of a London pub.  Well worth the visit if you are in the area.

  1. Although I’m based up in Manchester the company I work for is HQ’d in the Unilever building directly opposite the Black Friar. Took me ages to get around to visiting though – always seemed to be dashing for a tube to get back to Euston. Finally got in there for a pint with a mate from work a few weeks ago – lovely pub, absolutely stunning decor. Think we had Sharp’s Doombar when we were in there and then just as we were leaving they put on a cask of Marston’s Old Empire… (typical)
